Dubbed "The Island City," Wilton Manors is encompassed by the North and South Forks of Middle River, which split just west of Federal Highway (US-1) in Northeast Fort Lauderdale. The North Fork meanders west in pretty much a straight line, while the South Fork splits off to the south in a lazy arc before they join once again just below the intersection of I-95 and Oakland Park Boulevard.
Originally known as Colohatchee, home to both Tequesta and Seminole Indians, earliest accounts date back to one of the area's most notable pioneers, Frank Stranahan, who purchased farm land in the southeast corner of what would become Wilton Manors around 1900. His wife Ivy recounted the river's water was clear and colorful fish usually accompanied their canoe. South Florida was a wilderness of scrub forest and swamp in those days, so there were also alligators, wildcats, bears, raccoons, and a wide range of birds, including eagles and hawks and owls.

The name Wilton Manors was coined by Edward J. (Ned) Willingham, a land developer who'd moved in from Georgia to build an upscale residential neighborhood. Wilton Manors was officially recognized as a village in 1947, and then incorporated as a city in 1953.
The main business corridor centers around Wilton Drive, an internationally known shopping an entertainment district which features a wide range of stores and boutiques, over 40 restaurants, lounges and nightclubs, a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
Consistent with its designation as a pedestrian friendly city, many search for housing within walking distance to Wilton Drive. A variety of bed and breakfasts only a block of two off this main thoroughfare offer visitors easy access to "The Drive" and the flambouyant hospitality, entertainment and lifestyle unique to Wilton Manors.
