Wilton Manors was originally developed by Edward J. (Ned) Willingham, who came to South Florida from Georgia to build an upscale residential community. It has been nicknamed "The Island City" because it is bordered by the North and South Forks of Middle River, which split just west of Federal Highway (US-1) in Northeast Fort Lauderdale. The North Fork flows west in a rather straight line. The South Fork meander to the south in a gentle arc before they once again join just below the intersection of I-95 and Oakland Park Boulevard. Wilton Manors was officially designated a village in 1947, incorporated into a city in 1953.
