A lovely neighborhood with shady tree-lined streets near where pioneer Frank Stranahan operated the ferry and trading post which grew into the city, houses in Victoria Park were originally built through the 20s and 30s. The Old Florida charm it retains is largely due to Mary Brickell, wife of William Brickell, who purchased large tracts of South Florida land dating back into the 1800s. When Henry Flagler was building the Florida East Coast Railway, Mary Brickell, who liked the trees, refused to grant Flagler a right of way through the oak hammock just north of the New River. As a result, Flagler had to curve his tracks to the west, around what is now downtown Fort Lauderdale, thereby preserving this jewel of a neighborhood and shaping the city itself.
