parkland, florida real estate listings house for sale

The official Parkland, Florida website bills itself as a tranquil city nestled in a serene, wooded environment. A luxury brand, predominantly residential, Parkland is comprised mainly of relatively new homes located on large pieces of property. When originally chartered the minimum size for a home's lot was 2.5 acres. Now known for strict zoning laws to preserve the city's "small town, park-like flavor," Parkland is around 12.8 square miles, home to about 32,000 residents (as per the 2016 U.S. Census). Median household income was estimated to be $131,340 annually, and the median home value $596,212.

That last number, frankly, sounds a little low. Just look at the listings which appear below when we run an MLS search.

Within Parkland you will find 8.5 miles of multipurpose trails, bike paths, and sidewalks; a 7.5-acre Equestrian Center, the 20-acre Doris Davis Forman Wilderness Preserve, the citizen-constructed Liberty Park featuring patriotically themed play areas, and Pine Trails Park, spanning 80-acres, with a Community Center and Amphitheater, three pavilions, sports fields, playgrounds, a fishing pier and boardwalk.

History of Parkland, Florida

Parkland was founded by Bruce Barnett Blount. Born in Pompano in 1918, he attended local public schools, graduated college with a degree in animal husbandry. After serving in the Second World War he returned to South Florida, elected Mayor of Pompano Beach in 1956, serving as a Commissioner through the late 50s.

Blount and his wife, Lois, inherited land from his parents circa 1960 in the northwest corner of Broward County, on which he raised horses and cattle. Envisioning a city on the land he owned, Blount hired surveyors and civil engineers to plat 360 acres, with a reserve of 60 acres, offer lots for sale, dedicating more land he owned further west for agriculture, instituting covenants (such as the afore-mentioned minimum lot size of 2.5 acres) designed to encourage retirees who liked animals and gentleman farmers to bring young families to engage in agrarian pursuits, ranching and farming.

Bruce Barnett Blount named these plats the BBB Ranches.

In the early 1960s Blount enlisted Florida House Representative Emerson Allsworth to assist in approval for a city charter, a difficult task since the targeted name, The Ranches, conflicted with other private ranch communities in northern counties of the state, in addition to which the new city had only an estimated seven to nine residents. Allsworth substituted the name Parkland, and the City Charter was approved by the Florida House of Representatives on July 10, 1963, signed by Florida Governor Farris Bryant and recorded in Tallahassee on August 13, 1963.

At that time Parkland had a total of 9 homes and about 22 citizens.
