Luxury Condos "On The Sand" with Great Ocean Views, Low Monthly Maintenance and HOA Dues The Galt Ocean Mile is a towering row of 21 high-rise condominium buildings right "on the sand" along the edge of the Atlantic in northeast Fort Lauderdale. Over the years it has evolved from a neighborhood for elderly retirees to an active community for residents of all ages - professionals, foreign investors and winter refuge for snowbirds.
It is named after Arthur Galt, an attorney from Chicago who purchased 8,000 acres along the ocean in 1913. Coral Ridge Properties bought a large portion of this land in 1953, from Sunrise Boulevard to Floranada Road, from US-1 to the Intracoastal, including the strip fronting the ocean from Oakland Park Boulevard north. The purchase price of $19.4 Million was the largest real estate development deal ever recorded in Florida at the time.
For years The Mile was simply wind-blown dunes along the beach with only two hotels at its Southern end - The Beach Club and the Galt Ocean Hotel. Through the 60s and 70s, however, condos starting going up. Today there are now 21 of these buildings, looking like the Great Wall of Fort Lauderdale along the ocean.
You can search here for current listings available in these condominiums, however, be aware that some of these buildings are better than others. Some of particular quirks and foibles: some are older than others; some better maintained; some have small windows, so the units are dark; problems with parking, etc. You would be wise, perhaps, to consult a real estate professional who can guide you through the plus and minus of each.
Me, for instance. I grew up on the Galt. One of my first jobs as a teenager, working for a gourmet market, was delivering groceries to residents of these condo communities. My cousin was shopping for a condo on the Galt. When they opened the electrical box my brother's name was written on the inside. An electrician, he helped wire these buildings.
